Ousainou Bojang and Amie Bojang Speak!
Torture allegations must never be ignored. Wrongful acquittal alone is not justice.
EFSCRJ is deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations of torture, manipulation, abuse of power and inhumane prison conditions revealed by Ousainou Bojang and Amie Bojang in their interview with KERR FATOU – https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1CptqP4dYC/
These allegations strike at the very heart of the rule of law and the promise of “Never Again” that underpinned the Gambia’s transitional justice process. If true, they expose serious failures within our law enforcement and correctional institutions and demand urgent accountability.
EFSCRJ therefore calls on the National Human Rights Commission, The Gambia to conduct an immediate, independent and impartial investigation into the allegations of torture and abuse made by Ousainou Bojang, including the conduct of the officers he identified.
We also call for an investigation into the prison conditions described by Ousainou and Amie, which are wholly unacceptable after a decade of security sector reforms.
Justice requires more than an acquittal. It requires truth, accountability, redress and institutional reform. We therefore reiterate our call for adequate compensation to Ousainou and Amie Bojang for their wrongful arrest, prolonged detention and the immense suffering they endured.
No democratic society can tolerate torture, abuse of power or impunity. The rule of law demands that these allegations be fully investigated and that those responsible be held accountable.
