We have taken action. Accountability must follow.
Today, EFSCRJ formally wrote to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), with copies to the Inspector General of Police, the Minister of Interior, the Commissioner General of the Gambia Prison Service and the Attorney General, requesting an urgent, independent and impartial investigation into the serious allegations made by Ousainou Bojang and Amie Bojang.
The allegations include torture, cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, abuse of power, manipulation and deplorable prison conditions during their arrest, detention and imprisonment.
These are not merely allegations about two individuals. They are allegations about the conduct of state institutions entrusted to protect the rights and freedoms of all Gambians.
Justice does not end with an acquittal. It also requires accountability for unlawful conduct by public officials, effective remedies for victims and institutional reforms to ensure such abuses never happen again.
The promise of “Never Again” must be demonstrated through action, not words.
We call on the NHRC to exercise its legal mandate without delay and conduct a thorough, transparent and independent investigation.
