Six months after the National Assembly approved the Commissioners of the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Gambia still does not have an operational anti-corruption body.
The Anti-Corruption Act was first introduced in 2018 and only enacted in 2025 after an eight-year delay. Yet another six months have now passed without the President appointing and swearing in the approved Commissioners, thereby preventing the Commission from coming into legal existence.
At a time when allegations of corruption and abuse of office continue to emerge across public institutions, including recent allegations involving former CDS Mamat Cham, there is no justification for delaying the establishment of this critical institution.
EFSCRJ therefore calls on President Barrow to immediately appoint and swear in the approved Commissioners and operationalize the Anti-Corruption Commission. Fighting corruption requires action, not promises. Transparency, accountability, and integrity demand no less.
