40 Years of the African Charter: Where Is the Accountability?

On African Human Rights Day, EFSCRJ honors four decades of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Yet too many Africans still face poverty, discrimination, violent repression, conflict, and corruption while leaders violate rights with impunity. Ratifying treaties means little when governments disregard their obligations and deny victims justice.

African people deserve more than anniversary speeches. We demand enforcement of human rights decisions, protection of civic freedoms, effective remedies for victims, and consequences for abuse of power. Public office must serve the people. Forty years later, the Charter’s promise must become a lived reality.

Empowered Citizens. Accountable Leadership.
