Commemoration of Edward Francis Small & Official Launch of EFSCRJ

The Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice will, on Thursday, 29th January 2026, commemorate the life and legacy of Edward Francis Small, the pioneer of organized political activism, trade unionism, civic resistance, and the independence struggle in the Gambia, while formally launching EFSCRJ as a national civil society platform dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, democratic governance, and citizen empowerment.

The launch coincides with Edward Francis Small’s birthday, January 29 and underscores the enduring relevance of his ideals to the Gambia’s democratic consolidation.

To be held at the UTG Auditorium, Kanifing, the event brings together civil society leaders, youth activists, academics, media practitioners, public institutions, development partners, and members of the public to reflect on the historical foundations of civic struggle and their relevance to contemporary governance challenges.

Under the theme “Honouring the Legacy of Edward Francis Small; Advancing the Struggle for Human Rights, Justice, and Accountable Governance,” the event will feature keynote reflections on Small’s contribution to nation building, a high level panel discussion on accountability, good governance, and citizen participation, and the official unveiling of EFSCRJ’s mandate, strategic priorities, and flagship programs. The event will also highlight the Centre’s commitment to principled advocacy, evidence-based policy engagement, and inclusive civic action.

Speaking ahead of the event, the leadership of EFSCRJ noted that the launch marks a renewed call to action for citizens and institutions alike:

“Edward Francis Small’s legacy reminds us that rights are won through organized, principled struggle. As we honour his life, we recommit to advancing justice, accountability, and empowered citizenship which are indispensable values essential to the Republic we aspire to build.”

EFSCRJ is a registered civil society organization committed to strengthening the rule of law and accountable governance through activism, research, advocacy, civic education, coalition-building, and strategic litigation, with a strong focus on youth and inclusive participation.

Members of the media, civil society, academia, public and private institutions, political parties, communities, development partners, and the general public are cordially invited to attend.

We express our appreciation to the Njie Family Trust and all donors for providing the resources to host the event.
