EFSCRJ HUMAN RIGHTS INCIDENT REPORT — AUGUST 2026

The Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice presents its Human Rights Incident Report for August 2026, documenting significant incidents and emerging human rights concerns across The Gambia.

The report highlights concerns relating to the right to life, personal security, violence and unexplained deaths, freedom of movement, access to essential healthcare, migration and the protection of children, as well as ethnic and politically inflammatory rhetoric.

Of particular concern are several deaths requiring effective investigation, the death of Ebrima Gassama at Brikama Health Centre, and the increasing use of divisive rhetoric at a time when the country is approaching the 2026 presidential election.

EFSCRJ calls for prompt, impartial and effective investigations, institutional accountability, protection of fundamental rights, and stronger measures to safeguard social cohesion and peaceful democratic participation.

Human rights monitoring is essential to ensuring that violations are documented, institutions are held accountable, and victims and their families are not forgotten.
